Golden is nestled in the Rocky Mountain Trench, built around the confluence of the Columbia and Kicking Horse rivers, surrounded by three different mountain ranges (most notably the Purcell Mountains and Rocky Mountains) and five National Parks: Yoho National Park, Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Glacier National Park, and Kootenay National Park. Much of the town's history is tied to Fur Trading, the Canadian Pacific Railway and the logging industry, Golden is recognized as one of the most flourishing communities in the Kootenays.

The Purcell Mountain Range lies West of Golden, and to the East, are the Rocky Mountains. Both mountain ranges are uniquely beautiful and diverse; creating a multitude of distinctive features, including vegetation, climate and wildlife. Throughout the spring, summer, and fall months, the Columbia valley is painted with over 200 species of wildflowers. Year round, a great variety of animals and birds reside in and around the area.

Golden offers countless recreational activities to enjoy throughout each distinctive season as in known in many circles as the extreme sport capital of the world. Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is a world renowned ski hill, and during the warmer months, provides a multitude of mountain biking trails to experience. Mount 7 has numerous cross country and downhill biking trails, and paragliding and hang gliding launches. The Golden Golf and Country Club is known for its scenery, wildlife, and challenging course which gives each player a completely unique experience. There are numerous places to snowmobile and cross country ski, and the spectacular Kicking Horse River makes way for some extreme rafting and kayaking adventures. Additionally, the community of Golden has a thriving arts, culture, and music scene, with festivals all summer long. Numerous events, notably the Christmas Craft Fair, and the Fall Fair, are enjoyed by Golden's community, and visitors from far and wide! The residents of Golden are very welcoming and resourceful and much of Golden's history extends through them.
